Will the memories die

Fall to Pieces - Velvet Revolver
Millwood - Stanfield Home, Sunday 9:49PM

"Wyatt, what are you doing here at this hour? Shouldn't you be at school?" His grandmother embraced him warmly while chastising him and ushered him into the house. Cassandra smelled like chocolate; the entire house smelled like warm cookies on an autumn evening. "I've got your grandfather's favorite cookies in the kitchen Wyatt; come with me."

"Well now, look who's here, Cass, and eating my cookies? Wyatt, you look more like your father every time I see you! Isn't he like our Cooper?" Eric looked at both of them and then eased into a chair, leaned in and asked, "What's on your mind boy?"
Smiling half-heartedly, Wyatt replied, "What makes you think something is on my mind Gramps?"

"Well my boy, unless you smelled your grandmother's cookies all the way from campus my guess is you need to talk. There's been a lot of...excitement in the family of late."
Wyatt kept his eyes lowered as he thoughtfully considered the cookie in front of him. "Yeah I guess there has been."

They sat in silence for several moments until Cassandra finally spoke. "I think I'll clean up in the kitchen and head off to bed; you boys enjoy your treats!" Kissing Eric tenderly on the head, she smiled at Wyatt and left the room.

Eric rose and strode toward the pool table. He wasn't as spry as he used to be but he still managed to put a little spring in his step. "Let's see if you've picked up the skills to beat your grandfather shall we?"
The sound of the balls colliding on the table was the only noise that disturbed the silence. Wyatt lined his shot up carefully, not glancing up at Eric as he finally spoke. "I went to my mother's house today."
"Oh Wyatt..." Eric stood thoughtful, and exhaled as he regarded his grandson.

Wyatt set down his pool cue and folded his arms. He was unsure if his grandfather was the right person to answer his questions but he had to ask, had to know. "Did my father really love my mother? I mean, they were both really young, they knew each other for what, a week before they got married? Do you think...if the things that happened to them hadn't, would they still be together?"

Eric walked outside with Wyatt trailing behind. He glanced up at the evening sky and smiled. When he finally spoke Eric's voice was quiet, almost melancholy. "Your father loved your mother very much Wyatt but you know what terrible things kept them apart. When they found each other for the last time, neither one of them was the same person."

Turning back toward Wyatt, he continued, "They were young, very young and your father was impulsive. I wouldn't be honest if I didn't say I wish he would have waited. Julia was a wonderful young woman but she was ill equipped to be the wife of a rock star, too dependent and too idealistic, and your father's star was rising fast. I don't think either of them really knew what to expect. Your father became a huge presence; I really don't think your mother could have managed in the shadow of that. But you know all of this, Wyatt; why ask it now?"

"I have feelings, strong feelings for someone. It happened so fast. I think I love her but I don't want to hurt her. I don't know if I am ready to make a commitment, the commitment she deserves." Kicking a loose pebble with his boot Wyatt went on, "I've done some stupid things and I may still; I don't want to lose her but I don't know if I can keep her without breaking her heart."

Eric studied Wyatt for a long moment. He was very much his father's son but tempered with his mother's romanticized view of the world. "This girl," he began, "have you discussed how you feel about things with her? If she feels as strongly toward you, she should have a say don't you think?"

"Yeah, Gramps, she should." Forcing his mouth into a weak smile Wyatt started back to the house. "I should probably get back to campus; it's a long drive. Tell Grams thanks for the cookies."

Eric watched from the window as Wyatt drove away. "Everything all right with the boy, dear?" Cassandra stood waiting in the doorway. He nodded once, smiled and then followed her into their bedroom.
University Quad - Monday 4PM

Wyatt saw Cadence sitting alone absently gripping her coffee and staring at the stack of books in front of her. "You trying to will the words into your head there Cade?" he laughed as he sat down next to her.
"I wish," she laughed brightly as she set her coffee down. Her entire face lit up as she looked at him and Wyatt could not help but grim back at her. "I went home to my mom's this weekend and didn't get much done on the school front," she went on. "But," Cadence took a deep breath, "I told her about us, Wyatt, well not everything but my mom isn't naive, and she is okay with it!" She was beaming.

Squeezing his cup a little tighter than before, Wyatt fought to keep his face from exposing his shock at her announcement. "Cade, I thought we were going to do this together; I haven't even told your brothers yet."
"Oh I know that but she promised not to tell them. She understands that part. But she just seemed so sad and I thought it would make her happy. My parents have always liked you."

"Not always," he muttered. Wyatt couldn't help grinning slightly at her enthusiasm but he remembered the strange look on Heydon's face when he caught Wyatt appreciating how Cade had grown at her sixteenth birthday. He should have been with her. They should have done this together.

"Anyway we said we would tell everyone when I got to college so..." Cadence finally noticed the look on Wyatt's face and he didn't seem at all thrilled. "Wyatt, what's the matter? Are you upset about this; I thought we agreed?" The late afternoon sun dipped behind clouds. Mist from the fountain drifted toward where they sat.

Abruptly Wyatt stood and walked toward the fountains with Cadence trailing behind him. "What is the problem Wyatt?" Her voice sounded confused, almost angry, as she stood behind him. Wyatt could feel her gaze boring through his back. What was the problem? He didn't know where to begin.

Wyatt turned to face her. "It looks bad, me not being there with you. You should have discussed this with me Cadence, we should have talked about it first instead of you blindsiding me with it." Cadence stepped back, surprised, and brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"Blindsided...you're kidding right? Wyatt, we agreed! And I am not going to clear everything I say with you, I won't do that. If you want to keep hiding it, and I don't know why you would unless..." Cadence stopped as her expression changed from surprise to hurt. "Are you changing your mind? Do you want to break up? Is that it?"

"No Cadence, that's not it! Cadie...it's not that I don't love you. We're both still really young. It's just...we should have talked...maybe I needed more time!" That wasn't what he meant at all. He was going to make her cry. Wyatt paused, averted his eyes, and reached for something else to say that wasn't going to make this worse.

"You need more time? Fine, take it, take all the time you need. I love you, I really do, and I don't think I should have to pretend that I don't. But I am NOT going to sit around and mope and wring my hands over you Wyatt. You want to take it back? Go ahead. Tell everyone I made it up if you are so ashamed of me."

"And while you're at it, Wyatt, grow up and get over yourself!"
That surprised him; he had expected tears, not anger. Maybe he didn't know her after all. The skies opened up; rain began to fall in earnest on them as Cadence turned on her boot heel and walked away leaving Wyatt stunned.

We've waited so long for an update on Wyatt, and this was perfectly done. He has such intense emotions; the discussion with his grandfather was so sad. He's like a little boy still, still wondering why his father left his mother. And, it seems, wondering if he's going to repeat that pattern with Cade.
Cade, however, is definitely not Julia. She's really naive in a lot of ways but I cannot see her crying on her pillow for years.
I feel so sorry for both of them. What a struggle to sort out old problems, try to make sure they don't return, and still move forward. They make a beautiful couple. I hope they work it out.
Wonderful, heartfelt writing. Just perfectly done!
I like that last shot. How it looks as if Wyatt is rocked back on his heels and Cade looks furious! Awesome.
Most times Wyatt you have to let go of the past to move to the future. I'm just saying. Otherwise you're always going to question everything and weigh it against that one big, HUGE roadblock in your past. Or something like that! LOL!!
I'm glad we got to see Wyatt again!:)
SB: I'm glad I did it this way instead of my original plan. Wyatt is intensely emotional and just a little bit scared still. Thank you for keeping me going with this.
Phoenix: I don't think Wyatt was expecting Cadence to react like that. She definitely isn't like his mother in that respect. He wants to let go but he is scared. He will eventually get over it though. Thanks Phoenix!
Love, love, love Wyatt and Cadence!!
I know that Wyatt doesn't want to hurt her, but he is going to drive himself crazy trying not to repeat his parents mistakes. And I knew that she was not going to sit there and cry over it. She's got way too much spirit in her for that.
Young love....so complicated...so fickle.
Great shots and a wonderful new chapter!!! Well worth the wait.
At least he has the foresight to know he is putting his foot in it, even if he hasn't learned how to stop it time. That does give some hope that he can do a bit of fixing up once he works out that even though everyone compares him to his father, he is his own man and will not necessarily repeat history. And good on Cadence for walking away and not putting up with back-pedalling.
Muzegoddess: Cade is full of spirit and I think she knows that Wyatt will come around but if he doesn't snap out of it, well she won't cry in her beer. She will move on. She has some parental issues herself but I don't think she will repeat her mother's mistakes or her father's.
goodbye_sun: You nailed it. Wyatt needs to start believing in himself and in Cadence or any woman really if he wants to make it work. He is beginning to question his obsession with the past. I think he wants to move past it now.
:( Oh gosh, I had left a longer comment and it just disappeared...
Sorry...
I really feel sorry for Wyatt... his struggle with the past must be really painful for him...
but Wyatt you need to understand you are not your DAD!!! you will probably never make the same mistakes he did... so stop worrying and start living!!!
Live is so short to think about the past and to worry about the future... just enjoy what you have and learn from every experience!!
Cadence is a great girl and if you continue like "that" you will lose her...
I think it was really funny, did he really think he was going to cry? He doesn't know her at all.. but I still believe they do make a great match, a beautiful couple...
hopefully they will find a way to work this out...
LOL! Don't worry about long comments S@ndy, that isn't a big deal to me. I appreciate any and all comments.
Wyatt probably wouldn't worry so much if it was anyone but Cadence. Wyatt's mother would have cried so I think he expected that from Cade. Silly boy.
He is on his way to becoming famous, he will eventually tour just like his father and face the same challenges that living in hotels and on tour buses present. Maybe he wants to sow his wild oats before he really settles down and that will not go over well with Cadence.
Oh my goodness! I had just been hoping for an update on how Wyatt and Cade were doing! I really hope things work out for them, they make a great couple. Though I understand his fears about them still being too young..
Thanks Anonymous! They really do make a great couple, Cadence is really perfect for him and vice versa. But he is right...they are young, lots of living to do yet before they tie themselves down.
Love the easy way Wyatt's grandparents make him feel at home, surrounding him with the smell of cookies, I felt that way going to my grandparent's house, it was a safe haven.
As for discussing long-term commitment, Eric seems a more logical choice here than Cooper. Is Wyatt finally growing up, hope so!
Spoke too soon, Cadence called it, yet, she was impulsive too. Seems they have a way to go as yet, look forward to the ride, great update!
Wyatt has always been very close with his grandparents so it was a logical choice. It would have been too simple for things to just work out between Wyatt and Cadence. Thanks for reading Drew!
Blogger ate my nice long comment! I can't disagree with Wyatt, and I'm glad he's actually thinking before he acts. His lifestyle doesn't really accommodate serious relationships very well and it isn't as if he's had the time to figure out if he is really, truly in love with Cadence yet.
I can see bits of Cooper here, especially with the "control" issues they both seem to have. Hopefully Wyatt can overcome where his father failed--it will certainly ensure that he has a better track record with the ladies.
I think these two have a bit more growing up to do before they're ready. I just hope they can eventually find their way back to one another.
Ugh...Blogger ate mine too! :(
Anyways! *Must keep it together and not throw things!* LOL
I loved the scene with gramps and grammy, they seem like such wonderful grandparents, easy to talk to and laid back. I'm laughing though because he decided to go to them instead of Daddy! But I can see why. :D
Poor Cade, all excited about spreading the news and BAM! Someone sticks their foot in mouth. Still, his intentions were in the right place but dang, he sure didn't come across right!
Soooo can't wait to see where this goes now! *bites nails* Has Wy blown it for good?!!!
Fabulous update, as always!
Mao, thank you! You nailed it actually. They are both so young and should live a little before they tie themselves down. Even if they do love each other that could backfire at some point. Wyatt is afraid of hurting her because he cares so much.
Kids don't often learn from their parents' mistakes but at least he is looking at it. And while Wyatt is a lot like his father, he has so much of his mother's idealistic and romantic traits.
Sorry I didn't respond before; I don't know how I missed this!
Emily I love Eric and Cassandra. They are such a wonderful couple. I doubt Wyatt could talk to his father about Julia or what he is feeling, not right now. And his father told him more or less to fess up before. Like Mao mentioned, Wyatt wanted to control how things went down. I think he better realize quickly that Cadence is not one to be controlled and she isn't going to hide in the shadows. And please no worries about commenting. It's all good!
Ok I really really need to get back to reading more often.
Powerful, emotional and surprising all in one. Wyatt is trying to do what is right for Cadence, but is it really the right thing? Not everyone is the same and CADE!!! I have always adored her but what an intelligent and fire young woman!
She certainly put the ball in his court, so it will be intersting to see what he does with it.
Stunning shots as always and equally beautiful and breathtaking writing.
Seriously I so apologize for being so late on this. 80)
Thanks Cherie and no worries about being late. You have plenty on your plate right now. Cadence has grown up alot from the little princess she used to be. That doesn't mean she won't have a meltdown later though. And she has always said what is on her mind. We'll have to wait and see where this goes.
