Chapter 12 ~ Away From the Sun

Junior Year

In less than a few months Jason would be graduating and Wyatt would be entering his final year of college. More than once he considered leaving without finishing; Wyatt did not feel as if he needed a degree to do what he wanted but both his parents would want him to finish. However he did take advantage of the opportunity to enroll in some business courses. At the very least he would feel in control of everything that happened on the business side of the industry much like Jason did. More than one unsuspecting and trusting musician had fallen prey to the sharks out there that controlled their money; some even reaped most of the money for themselves.

While he liked the rental he shared with Jett and Jason, Wyatt looked forward to moving on. To that end he considered his mother's house as a temporary residence until he was ready to find something on his own. Wyatt believed he could live there for awhile especially since their plans included going on the road soon after graduation to cut their teeth. That meant they would not be there often. Jason could move in while Wyatt and Jett got through their last year.
Right now however, his goal was to meet his father near the marina. Wyatt had received a call from Coop who sounded distracted but firm as he requested Wyatt meet him downtown to discuss something important. This would be the perfect time to fill Cooper in on his plans for his mother's house, get the keys and check it out. Feeling pretty confident his father wouldn't like the idea, Wyatt was prepared to plead his case. The house was his anyway so any argument Cooper had was moot.
His father was waiting for him as Wyatt casually strode down the boardwalk. The unease in Cooper's voice was reflected in his expression as Wyatt approached him. His face was drawn, almost haunted, Wyatt noticed as he drew closer to his father. Increasingly concerned over the unease, Wyatt joined his father at a small table near the water and studied him.

"You look stressed Dad. Is everything all right with Rayne and the twins?" Pulling out his chair Wyatt sat, signaled the waiter and waited.
"Yeah, yeah everything's fine, relatively fine anyway. Wyatt I need to talk to you about something, someone that I ran into at the benefit. There is no delicate way to put it so I'm just going to come out with it. I ran into a woman, Gemma Wilson. Wyatt she's your mother's cousin."

Hesitating, Wyatt looked at his father carefully wondering why this information was important or warranted a face to face. "Okay, is there more to this?"

"Yeah there is. Look Wyatt I have every reason to believe she is going to try and contact you even though I asked her not to."

"Why would you do that?"

"She's the spitting image of Julia. I don't know how you would react to that Wyatt. If nothing else I wanted you to be prepared, that's all."

Wyatt looked out at the waves that crashed into the bluffs below the pier. The vision of his mother, her hair, her smile, all of it had never faded from his memory. Although he had moved past much of the pain and anger that he felt over her death Wyatt had finally come to terms with it. He understood his father's concern but wanted to reassure him that he would be fine. The last thing Cooper needed was one more thing to worry over.
"Thanks for letting me know, Dad. If I hear from her, I don't want you to worry. I can deal with it."

Cooper smiled, visibly relieved that he had at least been able to prepare Wyatt. "Good, I knew you could. It's just...it shook me up Wyatt; I didn't want her appearance to do the same to you."

His brows knit tightly as Wyatt assessed his father's demeanor. Clearly he was still shaken even though he did his best to hide it from him. Or maybe there was more at play here that his father wasn't telling him. "Dad, are you all right? If you need anything at all from me..."

Coop waved his concern off and grinned reassuringly, "Don't worry about me Wy. I can handle Gemma. Let's eat."

South Beach - Julia's House

Night had fallen by the time Wyatt reached his mother's old house. It wasn't the first time he had driven here; each time before however, he did not enter. Drawing a deep, steady breath he headed up the stairs and entered the house. Moonlight streamed into the windows, silver beams that cast an eerie glow over the near empty rooms. It was cold.

Tentatively Wyatt stepped out onto the balcony. It was definitely warmer outside than in the house but Wyatt still shivered as a slight breeze ruffled his hair against the back of his neck. The gardenia his mother had planted still bloomed and he could smell the sweet fragrance as it wafted up on the wind. He should have had the power turned on, he realized as he peered through the inky darkness that hovered over the pool. It may have been the shadows or the slow undulation of the pool that played tricks with his eyes but Wyatt swore he saw movement. He inhaled sharply as a lithe figure, painfully familiar, emerged from the darkness oblivious to his presence.

His father warned him about the eerie resemblance that Gemma Wilson had to his mother. Wyatt had been prepared to deal with it if he ran into her but he never expected the chills he felt crawling along his skin. Almost as if sensing his presence above her, Gemma looked up and locked eyes with him. Wyatt wanted to say something, anything, to break the silence but found he was unable to utter a word as he stared into a face that tore into his heart.

"May I come up?"

Nodding, Wyatt turned, walked toward the stairs and waited as she slowly ascended the stairs. The closer she got the more Wyatt noticed the subtle differences between Gemma and his mother. The tension in his body seemed to ease a little as Wyatt released the breath he hadn't noticed he was holding.

Gemma smiled warmly. "Wyatt," she began, "I have been looking forward to finally meeting you! I expected you to look like your father but I see a lot of Julia in you as well. I hope it's all right - may I hug you?" She reached out tentatively and Wyatt managed a friendly if not awkward embrace.

"What are you doing here - at my mother's house?"

"I had business in the area. I haven't been in town long and I thought I might take a drive up here and check it out. Millwood isn't exactly a bustling hub of activity; I thought if the place was empty..." Gemma stopped talking and examined Wyatt as if sizing him up. "You can't imagine how delighted I am that you happened to be here although I was planning to make the trip out to your campus. You're just about through with school aren't you?"

"Yeah one more year after this and that's it. Look, if you want we can go inside and talk." Wyatt wasn't sure what he should have expected with Gemma but she didn't seem like the barracuda that his father made her out to be. His first impression after the shock of seeing her was good. He liked her.

Gemma smiled broadly as she followed him into the house. "I'd like that Wyatt, very much."

It's always so heartbreaking to read anything about Wyatt. But this. Well yeah let's see. Coop's got something going on with Gemma, even if he says he doesn't. His son picked up on it. She's not that closely related, is she? Some kind of distant cousin? And Wyatt is scorching hot! And it is South Beach...

Something about this boy always makes me cry. The shots you got with Wyatt playing the guitar on his bed are phenomenal. Seeing him looking down from his mother's house, stunning.

It is so good to see you back again.

Thank you Beth, it felt good to get this out finally.

Wyatt is much more mature than he used to be. I doubt he will fall apart any time soon; he seems to have reconciled the past and his pain. Gemma is a distant cousin to Wyatt and he is very hot but then look at his father!

Wyatt <3
He's like Coop & Julia mushed into one. I like how he's came to terms with what happened to Julia and made peace with Coop (compared to his younger days).
Coop coming out with seeing Gemma was a good thing. He didn't beat around the bush which in the situation is the best I suppose. Wyatt's a big boy now and that got proved. :P
Gemma... I don't know about her. I can't help but stare evils - we don't know her true motives and what's she's going to do. Especially the last picture... but I want to be proved wrong :)

Qui. May 3, 2010 6:49 AM

I hope hope HOPE Gemma is not up to something that will end up hurting Wyatt! Wyatt always seems like he has a lot going on in his head and the last thing I want is more added to it! (sounding like a mother smh)

Wyatt is definitely hot!

Gayl May 3, 2010 8:48 AM

thelook: Wyatt is a good combination of his parents but the older he gets, the more he looks like Coop to me. But when I was searching for new hair for him I was surprised at how much he resembled Julia so he is a good balance I think.

He has definitely grown up and I think having a stable (for now) relationship with Cadence has helped that considerably. Right now Gemma is a wild card. We are still considering all our options with her motives.

Thanks for reading!

Gayl May 3, 2010 8:50 AM

Qui: I would like to think that Wyatt can manage to get through anything that Gemma can throw at him without falling apart. He is much more emotional and was fragile when he was younger but I think he has outgrown that. The rose-colored glasses are off now.

He is hot isn't he? Thanks so much Qui!

The Lunar Fox May 3, 2010 10:47 AM

Wow, how creepy for Wyatt to run into her at night, in the dark, at his mother's house? I would've been suspicious right away. Well I was suspicious of her right away.

There's something of an innocence to Wyatt, isn't there? He seems rather trusting.

And I agree about those first couple of pics. They're like the perfect Wyatt pose. He is very hot, lol. And that hair does look really good on him.

Muzegoddess May 3, 2010 1:07 PM

Wyatt's back! I'm so glad that the inspriation bug bit you and allowed you to come up with this. I love the shots of Wyatt playing the guitar on the bed, they just capture his esssence so completely. And boy does he look like his father (his eyes are all Julia though).

It's clear that Cooper is still thrown by the Gemma thing, but I always had a feeling that Wyatt would be a bit more receptive to her (at least initially). I would think that going back to that house would be harder for him and I'm sure seeing Gemma there alone at night was haunting. He seems to be coming up to a crossroads which excites me and scares me at the same time when you throw Gemma into the mix. The jury is still out on her though.

I really loved this one. It's got me excited for more. Really missed him.

AtomicSpaceKitty May 3, 2010 1:20 PM

I'll just chime in and agree that I'm loving Wyatt's new hairstyle. It really looks hot on him.

I'm tentatively liking Gemma more and more. So far, she's not done anything bad. I mean, she can't help it if she looks basically identical to a dead woman. Yes, it's a bit creepy that she looks like Wyatt's mom (especially since I'm curious if there will be anything romantic between her and Wyatt...), but I'm really interested in seeing how their relationship progresses no matter what it might be.

Gayl May 3, 2010 4:46 PM

It was creepy having her wandering around in the dark. Even creepier when I realized there wasn't much of a balcony on that lot to work with. I needed smoke and mirrors to pull a couple of those shots off.

Wyatt does have a generally rosy view of life, something he got from Julia I think. That idealistic, romantic notion about life and love. Glad you liked those shots! ;)

Thank you!

Wyatt is back! For now anyway LOL! He does look so much more like Cooper doesn't he? And Muzegoddess you bring up a good point about Coop being thrown by the Gemma thing. Wyatt doesn't see anything beyond the fact that she seems nice and she is a relation to his mother so it is almost like a bond from the get-go.

I was hoping to move him along in school and I did that which was a relief and I definitely think we are onto some ideas to shake things up some. Wyatt is at a crossroads but he isn't going toward it with as much baggage which is good.

And I missed him too. Thanks!

edited to fix spelling snafu

Gayl May 3, 2010 4:53 PM

Kara, thanks about Wyatt's hair. I had been looking for a VERY long time and when I saw that one I knew it was meant for him. I like the way it changed his look enough to make him more mature.

Gemma is an enigma right now. I'm not so sure is is bad or good at this point. I like her so far. As for a romance between her and Wyatt...hmm, well she is a distant cousin so it isn't completely out of the realm of possibility. Either way, they will interact a lot more than Cooper will like.

Thanks for reading! :)

Dinuriel May 3, 2010 11:41 PM

Oh man, that's got to be so unnerving. The spitting image of your dead mother. Yikes :S

I think Wyatt handled it fairly well, though. He's definitely growing up.

A Wyatt/Gemma romance would be kind of interesting in a disturbing way. I guess they'd be... first cousins, once removed? And then add Gemma's resemblance to Julia and there might be some Oedipal undertones in there. I wouldn't wish that sort of scarring situation on Wyatt, but incest in literature does have a sort of "OMG can't look away" factor. Plus, imagine how Cooper would react to that?

I still love Wyatt+Cadence, though.

S@ndy May 4, 2010 6:02 AM

I don't know why I cannot trust Gemma! Why did she wait so long to make an appearence? Why is she so interested in Cooper and Wy? She really is up to something, and I have a feeling it ain't good!
Wy looks fabulous, he really is gorgeous, he is a beatiful convination of Cop and Julia, he got the best of his parents! And he has grown into such a wonderful man, he looks much matured and at ease, I'm glad he was able to accept evrything what happen in the past, I'm gla he moved forward and was able to forget his dad.... They seem much closer now and that is just wonderful. I bet Julia would be so proud of him!

Really great chapter! I love your writting and the shots are lovely. Great job!!!

~Drew May 4, 2010 6:50 AM

Great to see Wyatt again, love the new hair, and he seems to exude a new maturity, maybe it was the conversation with his father, and him innately sensing Cooper has a lot on his plate.
Glad you are continuing this, there is something about Wyatt that just has me wanting to hug the stuffing out of him.
Great update, and on the bed with the guitar, well done! How did you do it??
Also loved the long shot of Cooper waiting for him at the marina.
And Gemma, hmmm. I am suspicious.

Gayl May 4, 2010 8:31 AM

To be fair, she isn't an exact replica...there is a funny story about Julia and one that causes me to tremble when I consider Wyatt having children one day...but that is for another time.

Wyatt has grown up and is a lot more stable thanks to some good influences and support. As for a Wyatt/Gemma romance it does feel a bit icky but it does have that train wreck you can't stop watching feel to it. As for Coop's reaction...it would NOT be pretty. At all.

Thanks Van!

S@ndy you may be right not to trust Gemma. We haven't completely fleshed out what she is doing and why aside from the fact that she is building a business rep and wanting to use whatever connections she can manage. Her resemblance to Julia is certainly a foot in the door.

Wyatt has moved on and forgiven his dad which was about time. Wyatt misunderstood many things between his parents and acted out of childish and stubborn behavior. I think Julia would be proud of him as well.

Thanks again for reading S@ndy!

Drew I love that hair on him; I am certain it was made for him! LOL! Seriously I looked long and hard for decent hair that screamed Wyatt and that was it!

Wyatt has matured and I think he wanted to show his father that. Even though he hasn't been on the main stage, he does know what is going on with his half-siblings as well as Coop and Beth and does not want to be another source of worry. He has already done that in spades!

As for the bed and the guitar...well that is secret squirrel business that you will learn about soon!

Thanks Drew!! Appreciate it!

goodbye_sun May 4, 2010 8:49 AM

I'm still pretty suspicious about Gemma. She hasn't seemed they type that can separate her work form the rest of her life, so even though she is playing nice with Wyatt, I suspect there will eventually be that question of what he can do to help her career along. And though it was the smart thing for Cooper to warn Wyatt, it also seems to have piqued his curiosity about her.

S.B. May 4, 2010 9:03 AM

and I know this is going to seem like a strange post coming from me, but I'm really in the dark at this point.

What's going to happen when Rayne meets Gemma? Gemma is Jimmy's agent, so that's going to happen soon. Will Rayne's girldar go off RED ALERT RED ALERT? She's usually very suspicious of women who try to get close to her father. Her brother? Don't know. Or maybe Gemma and Rayne will be BFF's.

Gayl May 4, 2010 9:19 AM

Goodbye_sun I think everyone should be suspicious of Gemma. Everything she does has a motive behind it. Cooper does not want anyone's boat rocked at this point and I think he doesn't know what to make of her either. As for Wyatt, he may be slipping those rose-colored glasses on again...

Gayl May 4, 2010 9:21 AM

Beth I can totally see Gemma and Rayne getting along. Rayne has no attachment to Julia. She never knew Julia and probably would not care about Wyatt so much as she would any woman's motives for getting close to her dad.

But Gemma's connection to Jimmy and Rayne's aspirations might just make them allies.

cheripye May 10, 2010 6:16 PM

Coop and Wyatt have really come to terms with one another, it is wonderful to see. I love the concern from cooper regarding his sons reaction and what a nice peak at the upcoming plans. 80) Plus he's moving into his mother's house hooray! will Cadence be joining him? LOL!

Gemma I dont quite trust, is she really genuine in her want to get to know her second cousin did she care for Julia? or are there ulterior motives at play here? I am sure you will tell us soon enough. BTW I love that hair on Wyatt and the screens are gorgeous, especially that last one his eyes just seem to glow.

EXCELLENT update BRAVO!

Gayl May 10, 2010 6:57 PM

Thanks Cherie. Coop and Wyatt do seem to have a much better relationship and understanding. As for Cade moving in with Wyatt, she will still need to finish school and the boys will be touring so we will have to wait and see.

I love Wyatt's hair too. It was perfect for him. Thanks again for reading.

Sinclair June 13, 2010 11:28 PM

i cant believe im so behind! gosh you dont check a site for a couple of weeks and all kinds of things happen lol.

on another note...wowwww. wyatt just made me jiz in my pants. he got reallllly hot all of the sudden.

and gemmma. that girl..i dont think i trust her. she's got an agenda.

Gayl June 14, 2010 3:43 PM

Hey Sinclair! Wyatt got hot all of a sudden? Must be his new hair...hehe

Gemma may have an agenda but what that is exactly remains to be seen!

Thanks!!
